Question by sportsman72901: How efficient in energy storage is a high tensile steel spring? An example might be a watch spring.?
I am wondering if a coiled ribbon type spring has equal the storage potential, or greater, then let’s say a rod coil spring, such as what is used on automobile suspensions.

Efficiency is usually defined as the ratio of work out to work in. In both cases the efficiency is very high and the same in both. Specific potential energy capacity, however, is the maximum energy stored per unit mass of spring before any part of the spring permanently deforms. The rod spring is better in this regard since the (shear) strain in the rod is more uniformly distributed than the (tensile) strain in the ribbon. In both cases strain drops to zero in the center, but the cylindrical geometry of the rod puts more energy in the outer regions, where strain is greatest. You could say, then, that the rod coil has a greater efficiency of mass utilization. A tube coiled into a helical spring would be more efficient still, by this definition, since the core is basically just dead weight anyway.

Question by Jimmy: Is there a hard drive storage device that i can store and watch my dvds from my tv?
Preferably with a remote sensor to navigate through my collection of DVDs. This way I can worry less about the storage, preservation, and retrieval of my favorite movies. Any body know of a system for this?

Yes there is. Microsoft provides the software and I think the hardware, you might want to try any local home theater specialist store (not Best Buy) such as Magnolia Hi-Fi (which is owned by Best Buy) I saw a demo of the product a few years ago, it was basically a hard drive (1 – 2 TB) with Microsoft multimedia software that stores the DVD content (special features and all) on the server and you can acess it from your TV. I am sorry I don’t remember what it was called. But that should give you a head start. You might want to check hometheater.com I am sure they have some more recent articles and reviews.
