Q&A: Can you use ‘portable storage’ when moving from and to an apartment?
Question by mrsbygtigger: Can you use ‘portable storage’ when moving from and to an apartment?
I will be moving across the country, and I am trying to find a reasonably priced, trustworthy company. Someone suggested PODS and 1800Pack-Rat to me. They’re the same thing, just competitors. I live in an apartment building, so I can’t see how having a portable storage container would fit my needs since I don’t have a personal driveway. Have you ever used these services when moving to/from an apartment?

No, I haven’t used them but years ago I used to be in the household moving business. If you use PODS or a similar service you will pack and load your possessions into the POD. It will be picked up and moved or stored as you request. Anything broken is your responsibility. If you use a full service mover they can pack your belongings, including anything requiring special handling, store them for you at either the origin or destination, deliver them to your new residence, unpack them and allow you to file a claim for any damage caused by the carrier. You may choose any or all of these services but you will limit their liability if you don’t buy the whole package. As for me, I have confidence (from my experience) that I can pack as well as any moving company. But I don’t want to have to carry stuff in and out, up and down stairs, etc. You can limit the amount of time a storage container is on the property by packing everything you can, inventorying your load, and have the storage device delivered and picked up on the same or following day.

Is there a moving company that can provide storage?

I am moving soon, but I need to store some things away for now and would like to use just one company. Is there a moving company that can provide me with moving services as well as storage?

Check out PODs.com. They have storage units they drop off at your home, you load them, then they take them to their facility and store them for as long as you like. Then when you want them back, they deliver to the new house and you take your time unloading. Their containers are about the size of a 1 car parking space. For smaller containers, try Door to Door storage (not sure if they are national).

Question by : What are the moving options to emptying out a storage unit to a new house?
Right now I have a storage unit, but I recently got a place about 55 miles away from it. I don’t drive, but I have the keys and I’m ready and able to move in. What can I do?
(This is in Wisconsin, US).

U-haul’s in some counties do provide “helpers” for a price some will load and drive then unload for you but it will cost you and you may have to pay the mileagee for the truck rented to be driven to the place you rented it.

Q&A: Is there such option as a storage company that also ships to the destination you are moving to?
Question by Ladybug1023: Is there such option as a storage company that also ships to the destination you are moving to?
I will be moving from a two-bedroom apartment in mid-June from Baltimore, MD to Honolulu, HI for Graduate school. I need to find a storage company that also ships furniture and belongings to my future destination in Hawaii. I heard about Public storage for storage but do they also ship your stuff at a future date? PODS is another option I have heard about but they seem expensive especially to the destination I’m moving to. Any suggestions? Thanks for your helpful responses.

Any shipment to Hawaii is going to be costly. The cost will depend on weight, or volume, or some combination of both.
I suggest that you go to your favorite web search site and type in
moving and storage companies baltimore
and see what comes up. There will be the standard moving companies like Mayflower, Bekins, Allied and some others, but you may also find more local companies who can handle the whole process.
You will need to contact several of them so they can come to your apartment, survey what needs to be stored and moved and provide an estimate. Get EVERYTHING in writing!! Get them to explain exactly what their liability is for broken, damaged or lost items – that policy needs to be in writing as well.
Good luck, and I hope the experience is not too stressful.
