Q&A: Is there actually any money in buying storage units?
Question by : Is there actually any money in buying storage units?
I’m a huge fan of Storage Wars but I’m sure there is a ton of work involved behind the scenes like networking with auctioneers and finding out about different auctions, not to mention knowing how to sell your items. Can anybody fill me in here?
Is it a relatively hard profession to work in?

It’s a much harder business than it used to be. Because of all of those TV shows there are now a ton of newbies who think they are all going to get rich. It’s driven up the prices so much that it’s hard to make a buck now.
Unless you have your own store, and most people don’t, you are going to be spending lots of time at swap meets trying to get rid of most of the items. Consignment stores are a fair place to get rid of larger furniture items and appliances like refrigerators and washer/dryer sets. Many of them are limited on space though so you can’t flood them with stuff.
Craigslist is okay if you live in a major city. It is also full of scamers who will try to rip you off if you let them. eBay is fine for small items. Just be aware that most lockers are full of everyday crap that can be hard to get rid of. Those shows rarely show the many trips to the junkyard they have to make. And by the way the junkyard will charge you to get rid of the junk.
Not all places or all employees are honest. If they open a locker and there are hand prints in the dust then chances are the locker has been gone through and the good stuff taken out. It happens much more often than you might think.
It’s always a lot more work than you see on TV. Often units are filled with someones whole house and you have a limited amount of time to get it out. I have rented units in the past simply because they were too good to pass up but it cuts into your profit doing that. If you don’t have the room to store the stuff you buy until you can sell it then make sure it’s really worth it.
I’ve gotten some nice units that I’ve made a ton of profit off of. I’ve bought units that I’ve lost money on. I spent $ 450 on a unit half full of unmarked sealed boxes. They turned out to be full of old tax papers from an H&R Block business. Completely worthless.
Some of those shows suggest that you will find antiques and collectibles and guns in every one. 98% of the time you don’t. The last time I found a gun in a unit was three months ago and it was in such poor shape and so common that I only got $ 40 out of it. Every state has their own gun laws to worry about too. Even different cities in the same state can have different laws.
It was never an easy business. It’s gotten harder lately.

Depends on your area, how many storage units are already in the area? Is there a market for them?
I would say, start slow, like 72 units or so. (a few buildings) and as those fill, build more. Theres no point in making that big of an investment just to have a ton of them take forever to fill up. it would also give you an opportunity to see if the profit/cost ratio is worth it to you.
But yes, storage units can possibly be a good way to make money without having to put alot of work into them.

Right now I use Box.net for all my pictures since it offers 5 GB of free storage, but I found out about Adrive which offers 50 GB of storage! How are they able to offer that for free? Is their a catch?

Answer by Shahnn
According to Adrive’s TOS, the “free” storage offer is only valid for 14 days. If one uploads a sizable amount of content, they’re probably going to purchase a paid account rather than have everything deleted (waste of bandwidth and time to upload it in the first place)

How much money would it cost to build a small storage shed?
Question by Claypool: How much money would it cost to build a small storage shed?
I know that is a very broad question but I am just curious about the pricing of a No-frills, very basic small storage shed. I want to build one myself and I just need to make more room for my garage. I need some space for my tools and lawn equipment(mower, weed eater etc..)

Depending on how big you want your shed. Will determine what it is going to cost. You have to figure the lumber, nails, and roofing. Get your plan first, and figure out how much lumber is needed, then figure out how much roofing is required. Nails figure about 5 bucks. Don’t forget paint also if you plan to cover it.
Also if you make it too big, you have to build a a level base for it to sit on. This means some form of footing.
Have fun.
