Question by : Can I use a storage unit as a garage, to restore an old car?
I’m in the process of buying a classic car, which I intend to restore and spruce up. But, I live in an apartment complex and have no garage to work on it.
Can I rent out a storage unit, with electricity and lights of course, and use that as a garage? It’s near-impossible for me to find straight answers online.

Also, I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba. So any facilities in the city would be great.

It won’t be easy to find a facility that would be okay with that but you can ask the managers of a few places. It is something you will want to have straight up front… and you may find a taker.

Storage area contains items from largfe furniture items, tools, boxes, even things we inherited that we have NO IDEA what’s in the box, we just took it and threw it in “there”.

You have first , to make a lay out for this area , then you logically start to devide this area on paper , then comes to the actual place and just put it real ..

Like those massive storage areas that are just like rows of garages? I want to store a car, but I cant find a straight website to tell me how much they usually cost. Do they charge monthly or yearly? I don’t know! lol, any help appreciated!

Question by puzzle66: What do I need to check for or do to convert attic above garage for storage?
I have a roof pitch that goes from about 3′ to 20′ above my garage, which allows me to stand erect in most of the area. I want to convert this to an attic storage. I have 2 x 8 ceiling joists running the width of a double garage. I would like to be able to put a lot of weight up there without having to worry about it. Would a ceiling support running down the middle of the garage with posts at each end be enough?

if you run a beam under th joist to support them depending on the length of the beam you may need to support it in three place one at both ends and one in the middle.are the joist 16 inch centers?if so that would be great if 24 inch centers you will have to add one every 12 inches.use 5/8 plywood for sheathing tonge and groove would be best.

I have a very nice leather couch that I paid $ 3500 for and now I’m moving in with my girlfriend and have no room for it. I’m renting a self storage garage and looking to put it in there but I’m worried about the cold/warm weather and what it can do to to the leather. Any suggestions?

If you must store it, you need to get a climate-controlled unit. Extreme temperature fluctuations can cause your sofa to split, shrivel, or otherwise damage it. Leather must “breathe”, so the option of covering it in a tarp is viable only if you can find one made of fabric, not plastic. If you do this, first treat the entire sofa with a spray-on leather conditioner (available where they sell leather jackets, purses, etc.). Check on it at least monthly, and clean with a leather cleaner as necessary. Most important, though, is to keep it from extreme temperature changes.
