What is the purpose of Mormon food storage?

Question by : What is the purpose of Mormon food storage?
One person said it was to prepare for hard times. In that case, do Mormons believe that an apocalypse will happen? Another person said it was to help the poor. If it’s just sitting in storage, then how would it be helping the poor? Sorry, I’m really ignorant about the Mormon religion!

The biggest item to impact on food in the last two hundred years is the invention of refrigeration.Technology has also had a very important role to play in the western world. Understanding the science of agriculture, has improved pasture development, meaning more animals per hectare, better utilisation of seeds, and the application of fertilisers.
The invention of freezers and refrigeration has enabled the transport of frozen meat from New Zealand to England lead the way in transport perishable product. The advent of tractors has also introduced new types of technology to farms.
The invention of a can to store food, such as Baked Beans, has also brought new technolgy to the consumer.

Hope this helps you. There is so much you can write on this topic.

Can you buy food storage items with Food Stamps?

Question by : Can you buy food storage items with Food Stamps?
Walmart sometimes has long lasting food storage items for sale. Can you buy these with food stamps? I’m talking about the buckets of oats and wheat, cans of dry milk, cans of powdered honey, etc. Has anyone bought these with food stamps?
I know the basic what you can and can’t buy. I’m not sure about long term food storage items. They last years.

You should be able to buy them with food stamps. I’ve heard that you just can’t buy prepared food like a cooked rotisserie chicken or pre-made salad from a deli.

If you carry homeowners insurance, and the food is stored at your house, that policy will probably cover it. Ask your insurance provider to make sure.

Do you have food storage in case of emergency?

Question by MumOf5: Do you have food storage in case of emergency?
If so, what things do you store?

I’m interested in hearing about foods with almost indefinite storage (eg dried legumes, grains, sugar, etc). What do you store, and how would/do you use it, when you need to live off your food storage?
I’m hoping to develop a year’s supply of food storage for my family, so the food needs to have a pretty long shelf life.
Thanks bocamom. Great ideas! icon smile Do you have food storage in case of emergency?
I’m pretty limited in the foods I can buy, as my family are allergic/sensitive to canned meat/fish, tomatoes, onion, spices, honey and other.

So far, I have on my list:
carob powder (very nutritious, long storage)
milk powder
white sugar
flour
dried lentils, beans, chickpeas/garbanzos
pasta
white rice

We can eat cashews (no other nuts) but they have to be raw, and I suspect that they do not store well.
I need foods with indefinite storage because my kids won’t eat storable foods… unless they are starving. Our diet is very limited to fresh stuff, plus what I have listed.
LDS are taught to have and live from a year’s supply of food storage (keep rotating). It can guard against things such as loss of employment, economic disaster (eg like the Great Depression) or serve as emergency food for the whole neighborhood in case of a local disaster, eg like New Orleans.

Not on purpose but there is usually plenty in my pantry. I don’t think we would soon starve.
