Q&A: How can I use my attic for storage?

Question by Call-Me-A-Landmine: How can I use my attic for storage?
I have a two story home, and in the extra bedroom upstairs, there is “attic access”. There is a ton of insulation & I am assuming I will not be able to convert this to a “storage area” for my inventory, but any guidance would be appreciated. It is just sooo much space…& would be super neat.

You can lay or nail pieces of cut plywood ( recommend 3/4″ due to the weight factor ) on top of the insulation and depending on the height of the roof you may be able to walk there and even build storage space.

What do I need to check for or do to convert attic above garage for storage?

Question by puzzle66: What do I need to check for or do to convert attic above garage for storage?
I have a roof pitch that goes from about 3′ to 20′ above my garage, which allows me to stand erect in most of the area. I want to convert this to an attic storage. I have 2 x 8 ceiling joists running the width of a double garage. I would like to be able to put a lot of weight up there without having to worry about it. Would a ceiling support running down the middle of the garage with posts at each end be enough?

if you run a beam under th joist to support them depending on the length of the beam you may need to support it in three place one at both ends and one in the middle.are the joist 16 inch centers?if so that would be great if 24 inch centers you will have to add one every 12 inches.use 5/8 plywood for sheathing tonge and groove would be best.

How can I put storage in attic space?

Question by grbarnaba: How can I put storage in attic space?
I have a space to crawl up through the ceiling in my bedroom closet to get to the attic space,it is about 3ft sq. I have to use a ladder to get up into this space. How can I convert part of the area above the ceiling in my closet into a storage area for keeping my extra things so I can get them out of a spare bedroom I want to make into a guest room? Any suggestions as to how to get the boards up into the space to lay them down to put the storage totes on to keep them from falling between the roof joists? I am wanting to use like plywood to make the “floor” for the totes, etc to sit on. Thanks for any help in this issue. I will be doing this by myself without anyone standing down and handing these totes to me,so please make the advice easy and safe for one person.

Cut your plywood to 24″ wide by 48″ long. So if you purchase a 48″ x 48″ piece of wood, you will get 2 pieces 24″ x 48″. While standing on your ladder, lift the pieces up through the opening and place them across your joist. You can do this many times to cover a larger area of your attic for more storage space. You can fasten them down with a few short nails or screws to prevent them from moving once you crawl up their.

Simple Plans When Building A Storage Shed

Building a storage shed definitely has its own benefits, particularly if you are a do-it-yourself handyman. For one, the station wagon could now have its own place back, and the attic could finally be free from its occupants and “breathe.” This will also provide additional space for your tools, as well as the other stuff that the rest of the family members need to put away.
