Should I use a dish rack in my kitchen for drying dishes or is it best to hand dry with a dish towerl?

I grew up with a dish rack in my parents kitchen as has been the custom for all of my family. I recently had a friend over and she said I didn’t have enough counter space for a dish rack as my kitchen is very very small. The size of a large closet, but with a family of four we use the dishes for a large dish rack. I wonder what everyone else uses. We don’t have a dishwasher. I usually wash and rinse dishes and let them air dry in the dish rack. I take them out and place them probably within the next day or so. Am I doing something wrong. I actually took the dish rack apart today and cleaned it, but couldn’t help but realize how much room was truly free with it being off the shelf. How do you handle your dishes for those without dishwashers?

Air drying is supposedly more sanitary…unless you live in a cool climate and it takes a long time for them to dry.

I don’t have a dishwasher either. I let mine air dry and put them away as soon as possible. Every now and again I may have to finish drying one or two items…but as soon as the dishes are put away I put the draining rack in the cabinet under the sink. It frees up so much room!

with that said…….if you want,…do the dishes, let them dry for a half hour or so, and then put them away…..
    OR
go ahead and dry them all and put them away as you go.

I personally miss the issue. so what else are you putting there, in that place, that is of such dire importance that the dishes can’t sit there awhile, huh?

    best wishes.

Dish racks should be against the law. Very few people keep them clean and sanitary. They are breeding grounds for germs and mold. Dish towels should be clean and unused if you want to dry the dishes. They should be put in the laundry after one use.

It is more sanitary to let the dishes air dry….Have you thought of a dish rack that fits in the sink….I have one of those, and leave my extra dishes, or pans in that…off the counter. I do have a 3 sink kitchen sink…which helps…At least the rack would be off the counter…They sell the small ones at so many places now…It might do the trick for you…And no you aren’t doing anything wrong….Shoot I usually put the plates away wet or damp if I have a big load of dishes…and the pots and pans always get put away wet….They will still air dry…My cups and glasses get put away bottoms down and air dry in the cupboards…Nothing wrong with doing that….once in a while other wise the cupboard would get icky over time… I have vinyl contact paper in my cupboards…so they are protected…

God created evaporation. Put it to work for you. Let your dishes air dry.
Once dry, you can probably store the rack in the cabinet under your sink. That way the counter-top is clear for preparing the next meal, but you still have the convenience of the rack for your next dish-washing session.
If at some point you really need the space where the rack is, then, that time, go ahead and dry the dishes.
Don’t let a friend convince you that a system that has been working for you is wrong. I’ve used a rack for 20 years and I am very happy with it.
